What to do right now

Water where it shouldn't be
- 01Shut off the main. It is usually where the water line enters the house, near the meter, often on the front basement wall. Turn it clockwise, or a quarter turn if it has a lever, until it stops.
- 02Open a tap on the lowest floor to take the pressure off the pipes.
- 03If water is near outlets or the electrical panel, turn off the power to that area at the breaker. Do not step into standing water near live electrics.
- 04Move what you can, take a few photos for insurance, then call. We talk you through the rest on the phone.
You smell gas
- 01Leave the house and take everyone with you. Leave the door open behind you.
- 02Do not flip switches, light anything, or use a phone until you are outside.
- 03From outside, call Enbridge Gas's 24-hour emergency line, 1-866-763-5427. Then call us. A licensed gas technician makes the line safe and fixes the appliance.
No heat or no hot water
- 01Check the thermostat is set to heat and its batteries are fresh.
- 02Check the furnace switch, which looks like a light switch on or beside the unit, and the breaker.
- 03If a furnace or water heater has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop there and call.
- 04Call. A gas technician tells you the arrival window before you hang up.
